Probiotics NOT A MEDICINE

Probiotic is a word that is familiar to us, from both mass media advertising, flyers, and billboards are installed on the roadside. Usually accompanied by an explanation of this term benefits. However, the familiar ears does not mean we all understand its meaning. Many people underestimate while others seem to overestimate that states that probiotics is a cure of all diseases.

Definition of probiotics

Probiotics are live bacteria that term means when administered or consumed in sufficient quantities can be beneficial to the body by creating a balance of intestinal flora (bacteria in the gut) so as to prevent and treat a pathological condition (pain) in the intestine. (Ellen S, Gibson).

Theory of probiotics started studied since 1908 by an expert Elie Metchnikoff microbes, also known as the father of probiotics. The study continued until 1953, Kollath introduced the term probiotic is defined as microbial transcription factors that stimulate the growth of other microorganisms. In 1989, Roy Fuller, a microbiologist, suggest new definition which is a dietary supplement that contains live beneficial microbes to the host animal improve the microbial balance of the gut. Two types of probiotic bacteria is the most dominating type Lactobaciillus and Bifidobacterium.

Between probiotics and prebiotics

In addition there is also the term the term of prebiotics. Prebiotics are carbohydrates from frukto-olisakarida ie short chains of sugar molecules that contain fructose. Prebiotics are fibers that can not be digested by the body and become food for probiotics. (Ellen S, Gibson).

Probiotics, medication or supplements?

Until now, the benefits of probiotics are still being debated. Scientists are still doing research about it. Publication tremendous benefits of probiotics is still a scientifically unproven assumption in detail.

According to the history and origin of the benefits have since been found, a probiotic is more accurately described as a healthy food (not a drug). By taking someone will be helped balance of normal flora in the gut. According to Prof. Bob Rastall (Reading University) with a probiotic such as functional foods are products contained therein ingredients or components that help improve health or reduce the risk of disease, but it is not a drug because it is not able to prevent or treat disease.
